The Prius engine is powered by both electricity from a battery and by burning gas in its internal combustion engine. Thus the name "hybrid." The battery is charged whenever the driver puts a foot on the brake. Braking triggers a mechanism that generates electricity and market it in the car's battery. In 2009, the Toyota Prius was rated by the federal Environmental security group (Epa) as the most fuel-efficient car on the road, averaging 50 miles per gallon.

These incentives can lower the effective price of electric cars so that they're competitive with similar gas-burning cars, especially when considering the savings on fuel year in and year out.
The Leaf had a waiting list of 40,000 buyers when it started delivery in late December 2010. One website that maintains an unofficial waiting list for the Chevy Volt, hit 50,000 worldwide in September 2009. Several other car associates are developing Ev models. By 2012, there will likely be a dozen different Evs for sale in the U.S., along with a plug-in version of the Prius.
What Are the Forecasts for Electric Cars in Los Angeles?
The forecasts for how many Evs will be sold over the next few years are all over the board. Pike Research, a communication diagnosis firm, just came out with a corner in early 2011 that in the next six years, in the middle of 2011 and 2017, over 96,000 electric vehicles will be sold in Los Angeles. It projects that Los Angeles purchases will be second top in the country, trailing only New York City. Its ample corner is 366,000 Evs sold nationwide by 2017.
Another study in 2009 by the University of California, Berkeley (Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology) projected that the U.S. Will hit 1,000,000 Evs sold by 2017. This is still far lower than President Obama's call for 1,000,000 by 2015, which many analysts think realistic.
Why are the projections so inconsistent? The U.C. Study explains. It mostly depends on the price of gasoline. For example, if gas prices continue at about .50 a gallon, they forecast only 18% of new car sales will be electric in 2020. But if gas prices rise to about .50 a gallon, the forecast rises to 45% of new car sales in 2020. Of course, contact tells us that gas prices move up and down very quickly and unexpectedly, often depending on events in the vaporing Middle East.
The safest statement one can make about electric cars in Los Angeles is that they're beginning in a big way now and will continue to increase over the advent years.
